Cellar Profile

Region

Adelaide Hills is a wine growing area in the Mount Lofty Ranges region of South Australia. It is one of the largest wine regions in the state, reaching the Flurried Peninsula and McAllen Vale in the south, and the Bares and Eden Valleys in the north. Key to the region’s grape growing is the altitude of its vineyards, which range from 400 to 650 masl. This gives the region, in an Australian context, a cool climate. Throughout the Adelaide Hills, the ripening season has historically been dry. This, along with cooler temperatures, allows the grapes to mature at a slow pace, resulting in concentrated wines.

Vineyard

Sourced entirely from Longview’s single vineyard at Macclesfield. All fruit is cane pruned, shoot thinned early and bunch thinned up to three times during the growing season to control yields.

Varieties

Pinot Grigio/Gris is thought to be a mutant clone of Pinot Noir and finds its origins in Burgundy, France. There are several styles of Pinot Grigio: Dry & Minerally; Dry & Fruity; and Sweet & Fruity. This Dry & Minerally style is most famous from the northern parts of Italy and traverses the foothills of the Alps nearly all the way from Italy through Austria and even Romania, Slovenia and Hungary. The mountains are a powerful force on the agriculture, insuring that grapes keep their high acidity. The wines are most commonly described as dry with relatively high acidity. These characteristics are complemented by aromas of lemon, lime, green apple and blossoms.

Winemaking

At the winery, the fruit was crushed, chilled and pressed immediately. 100% underwent a cool ferment in stainless steel to preserve the wine’s fruit purity. This was followed by slight lees stirring and finally cold stabilization.

Tasting Notes

Grown on a southwestern facing slope atop the Longview estate, this Pinot Grigio shows all the hallmarks of a traditional Italian style. The nose is overflowing with nacho pear and white blossom notes. The palate is crisp and dry with delicate green apple fruit, bright acidity and a textural finish.
