Tasting notes

2019 Antonio Lopes Ribeiro Loureiro

This is a certified organic, biodynamically-farmed and rare 100% Loureiro from the Vinho Verde region. Like many areas in Portugal, Vinho Verde is in the midst of a vinous revolution. Quality-obsessed producers throughout the region are making interesting, delicious and refreshing wines. One of Portugal’s earliest adopters of sustainable practices, Antonio Lopes Ribeiro makes low-intervention wines with complexity, elegance and structure. Mid-weight and approachable with plenty of character, notes of tangerine, apple and orange blossom and beguiling salty minerality.

2016 Casa Mouraz Red

Here is another organic/biodynamic wine, this time from the greatly under-appreciated Dão appellation, which takes its name from the river along which most of the vines are planted. This region has become increasingly fashionable, known most for its firm, structured reds based around the famed Touriga Nacional. This offering adds Tinto Roriz (Tempranillo) and other grapes to create a firm, complex and wonderfully aromatic wine. Note the vintage, as wine from the Dão is best served with a little bottle age to round some edges. This is rich, complex and highly intriguing, with notes of dark berries, cassis and violets.

2019 Pedra Alta Tinto

Finally, we head to the ‘heart’ of Portugal’s wine culture, the Douro Valley. While the majority of wine exported from this famed region is fortified Port, more and more wineries are making and excelling at, dry reds. Located in the Cima Corgo sub-region, Pedra Alta strikes a fine balance between tradition and modernity, elegantly showcasing the exciting breadth of offerings coming out of Portugal these days. This blend is big and powerful, at the same time bright and fresh. Loads of brambly dark fruit and liquorice alongside integrated spice box and vanilla.

About The Region

Prior to the pandemic, Portugal had become one of the world’s hottest vacation destinations. Located on the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal has it all: golden beaches, enchanting cities, Medieval castles and rich cultural history. And of course, it’s a gastronomic Mecca with ample amounts of intriguing, delicious and affordable local wine. While a trip to Portugal may not be possible right now, we can travel there through our wine glasses. We are pleased to offer this 3-bottle mixed case featuring wines from three of the country’s finest regions.
