Domaine Bargylus

The only private wine estate in Syria, it’s owned and operated by brothers Sandro and Karim Saadé. They produce minuscule amounts of organic, minimal intervention wines from atop the Jabal al-Ansariyeh (its ancient name was Mt. Bargylus), outside the port city of Latakia. Vines are planted in a mix of limestone, flint and clay, and enjoy a Mediterranean climate, with winds off the nearby sea, along with the 900m elevation leading to large diurnal shifts between day and night. The wines are aged for a minimum of 48 months in bottle before being released. Small-lot, intensely difficult production of high-quality wines. “The finest wine produced in the Eastern Mediterranean” – Jancis Robinson.
