Tasting notes
MOROPOULOS MANTINIA 2021
Gold hued, much darker than most young Moschofilero. It is also more expressive, with aromas of white flowers, citrus and pear dominating. The palate is nervy and fresh, with citrus, wet stone minerality, salinity and a hint of stone fruit, particularly apricot. There is a bit of weight in the mouth, likely from the lees aging, but the finish is crisp and refreshing. Lightly chill and serve with grilled calamari or Mezze platters.
Altocedro Paradoux Red NV
A blend of the classic Bordeaux grape varieties, Paradoux Red is made up of 20% each of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon contributes balance and tannic backbone; Merlot adds weight and plushness; Cabernet Franc brings floral elements and elegance; and Malbec adds complexity and weight. Petit Verdot — a grape known for its high acidity and tannin —is the most intriguing element here, providing additional structure and longevity, along with the acidity to make this big-bodied wine more lithe.
Tenuta Olim Bauda LA VILLA 2020
Big and structured. A powerful example of what Barbera can do in the right hands. Plum, mocha and ripe strawberry aromas lead to a full-bodied palate. Flavours of plum, cassis and dark chocolate are framed by generous acidity and a solid tannic grip. Easily drinkable now, but can be aged if one chooses. The structure calls for rare red meat, preferably a good rib steak.
